Monarchs Seek Probe Into Council Boss’ Assassination Plot

TRADITIONAL rulers in Ezza North Council of Ebonyi State, yesterday, urged State Governor, Martin Elechi, to, as a matter of urgency, set up a judicial panel of inquiry to investigate circumstances surrounding the shooting of the Ezza North Council Chairman, Mr. Ikeuwa Omebe, with a view to unearthing the masterminds.

Omebe, meanwhile, is receiving treatment in a hospital.

It will be recalled that prior to May 26, 2012 when the Ezza North Council Chairman, Omebe and the leader of the Legislative Council, Mr. Daniel Nweke, were attacked by gunmen, attempt was made on February 2, 2012 to impeach him from office.

Rising from an emergency meeting that discussed spiraling attacks and insecurity, the rulers from the 14 autonomous communities that make up the council, noted with “grave dismay” that such incident involving attempt on someone’s life should not be ignored by government.

They stressed, “time is now for the state government to show sincerity and severity” against crimes and criminality currently plaguing the state.

Their concerns are contained in a two-page communiqué issued by the Chairman and Secretary of Ezza North Council of traditional rulers, His Royal Highness, HRH, F. E. Chukwu; HRH Eze Law O. Ewa; and other members.

Expressing optimism that law enforcement agencies in the state would unmask perpetrators of the crime, the monarchs appealed to people of the council to remain calm and law abiding.

Part of the communiqué reads: “We call on the state government to set up a judicial panel of inquiry to investigate those behind the heinous attack, because a stitch in time saves nine. At this juncture we are appealing to the good people of Ezza North local government council to remain

calm because we still have confidence in law enforcement agencies, that they will uncover the perpetrators of the crime.

“We express our displeasure over the attack on the executive Chairman of Ezza North local government council, Mr. Ikeuwa Omebe, on May 26, 2012 by hoodlums we suspect to be hired assassins and we unanimously frown and condemn, in strong terms, the ugly incident.

“We state in unequivocal terms that the attack or attempt to kill our executive chairman is barbaric and pure wickedness by some desperate and disgruntled politicians who simply want to achieve selfish goals.”
