Alleged Serving NYSC Member Apprehended For Armed Robbery In Kwara State

The National Youth Service Corps scheme was initiated by the military government of Gen. Yakubu Gowon in the aftermath of the Nigerian civil war – to foster peace, national reconciliation, development, re-orientation and forge bonds of friendship among others. So, it is a thing of shock and disgrace to the ideals of the scheme when anyone of its member is found wanting in any area not less, armed robbery!

Barely three days after four undergraduate students of Uniport were meted a jungle justice treatment for alleged theft of mobile phones, laptops etcetera, a member of the National Youths Service Corps serving in Kwara State and two other men (names withheld by the police), have been arrested for their alleged involvement in armed robbery.

The corps member was said to be serving at Ira, a town near Igbaja in Ifelodun Local Government Council of the state.

The three suspects were apprehended by the Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kwara State, Mr. Olufemi Fabode, confirmed the arrests. He added that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad had commenced investigation into the incident.

The Kwara State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs. Ezinne Ezekwe, said she could not confirm the involvement of the corps member.

“I am still expecting the Commissioner of Police to brief me on the incident officially before I can make any comment,” she said.
