Breaking News: Uniport shut down as students set Aluu ablaze

Students of the University of Port Harcourt, went on the rampage Tuesday  protesting the murder of four of their colleagues by youths in Omuokiri-Aluu community  last Friday and set ablaze no fewer than 12 houses in the community even as the university has been shut down by the school authorities.

Spokesman of the university, Dr William Wordi confirmed the closure of the school to the Vanguard on phone.  He assured he was going to send an official statement.  It was yet to come at the time of this report.

Students from other institution under  the aegis of National Association of Nigeria Students, NANS, stormed the university  to mobilise  students in Port Harcourt to protest against the brutal killing of three of their colleagues and one other  by riotous youths in Omuokiri-Aluu community  last Friday.

The rampaging students blocked the East West road for several hours before allegedly marching to Omuokiri-Aluu community to start wrecking havoc. Community sources told the Vanguard that they torched about twelve houses.

Vanguard gathered that while the rampaging students were on the East West road, they reportedly insisted that they would only move out of the road after the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Joseph Ajienka had addressed them.  The Vice Chancellor reportedly obliged them after securing assurances that he would not be rough handled

Sources said while the Vice Chancellor came to plead with the students to shun any temptation to be violent some of the students immediately started hurling sachet water at him.

Vanguard gathered that it took the timely intervention of security operatives to whisk him away from the spot.  At press time, security operatives had been drafted to quell the situation.

  7. This is a national problem where corruption have taken over every area of our national activities. Even if arrests are being carried out now, soon they (suspects) would be granted bail and set loose. As for me, the police authority should be blamed for laxity towards the protection of lives and properties in nigeria. The killings was not just under one hour duration. How come that there was no police activities to stop the killings of these students? How come it is now medicines after death? Even the king of that community should be arrested because if he had instructed his subject to stop that barbaric action, it would have saved the lives of the killed students. Why are the kings in nigeria being paid salaries for not working but possing themselves as semi gods in front of tax payers that works up their salaries. All the arms of security agents in that zone should get their own blames over the mess
Nigerian students are known for their modus of protest meaning that the community were lucky to lost only some buildings to the students demonstration. The GEJ’s administration would never be forgotten in the history of unrests in nigeria.

  8. May d Lord av mercy on us inds country, amen!

  10. Students please for God’s sake am begging you to be calm. You have been hurt by so called Omuokiri Aluu community but let God who sees in secrets do something about this. Nigeria police should be blamed for not stopping the fight until they killed those boys.
May their souls rest in peace.

  11. Great Nigerian Students!!!!! Please don’t do more. Stop revenging for the sake of the little young children in that village who didn’t do anything and whom we hope on as we hope on you guys for a better Nigeria.
    May God bless you all.

  12. See comments o! 9ja 9ja! No logical thinking! May thier souls RIP. But we seem to 4get these guys were said not to be innocent! Killing them wasnt the solution @ all. Burning down the village shows who’s more foolish! We’re quick to support the lesser evil abi? God help 9ja

  13. The Police in Aluu have a case to answer for not preventing the killing of those students. The police should try as much as possible to aviod lossing more student to the criss. I wonder what the student are doing in aluu with just only 12 building been sent on fire, by now the entire village should have been out of nigeria Map. I trust Baba Iyabo, Obj the Genaral, Odi people will not forget u.

  14. Greatest Nigerian Students!!! March on Aluta soldiers…. ALUTA CONTINUA!

  15. too late…In the face of all these madness playing out in UP,i sit down and ask myself “Where were you guys that friday morning when word got out that 4 students have been caught for stealing”?.”What happened to the Aluta spirit of Injury to one, injury to all”?Why couldn’t the student @ the scene of the incident mobilize to call the security when it was obvious that their colleagues will not be spared?….so many questions fill my head at the end of it all,i come to the conclusion that everything boils down to proper awareness and orientation, cos if the students(at the scene of the event that very day)knew the enormous powers that they posses as students, the death of their colleagues would have been averted. If only the students truly know what the word “ALUTA” means. In the struggle for emancipation, we all know what role students played in liberating South Africa,we all know the turn of events that helped shaped our nation’s history during the 70s when the ALI MUST GO struggle was on.Truth be told,Aluta is as dead as those poor Aluu4 victims and man more acts of oppression will be meted out to the students of UP as long as the student body fail to live up to its responsibilities which is to inculcate into the minds of the young ones a sense of comradic spirit,it is only then that injustice will cease to be our neighbor there in UP. I rest my case.

  16. For those that are pleading for peace where were you when those cannibals arrested the 4 students? Why didn’t you plead for peace…. Durring my days as an undergraduate such had never happened before, it is high time Nigerian students to need redeem their image…. No to jungle justice. No to students killing…. Aluta continua…. Victoria ascerta, maximum shi shi!!!

  17. The dragon in Uniport students have been unleashed. A set of passive students who rarely protest. The most patient, tolerant Nigerian students. They’ve tolerated the incessant increase in school fees&endured the 700% increase in accomodation fees. They’v even refused to fight when the VC chased them from the hostels for inability to pay the exorbitant fees. They’ve borne the cross gallantly until the cruel murder of the 4. Then, pandemonium broke loose. It started with a peaceful protest, the East-West road was barricaded from about 10am till 5pm. The VC subsequently came in company of a representative of the nigerian president. A VC who did not have an erstwhile good relationship with the students wasn’t allowed to talk-satchets of water were hurled at him, & the man and his entourage ran away. The irate students pursued their VC to the school’s gate which was locked against the students. In a fit of fury, they made for Omuokiri,Aluu to avenge the murder of their colleagues by arson.
Lesson 1: Aluu. Why did u arouse sleeping dogs? The stealthiness of a lion is not to be interpreted as cowardice.
Lesson 2: VC. A leader should not be too rigid. You have reaped bountifully the harvest of not listening to students.
Lesson 3:Uniport: Two wrongs can never make a right.
I pray that God will douse this fire
raging through the land of Uniport with his Holy water.

  18. where are all dis student protesting nw wen dis evil act was ben carried out?do u wnt t tell me de students of dis sch living within d enivroments could nt mobilise dem selfs ans save does guys where did de nw mobilise dem selfs frm nw lets think of it

  19. Uniport students where were u wen ur 4 colleages were been de humanized, where were d police n d JTF this even took place 4 hours it was like a concert in uniport people were watching,God knows d best we the rivers state student in d daispora join in condemning dis act it is babaric, inhummanity to man, this shows that the presence of the school has no effect on d aluu community n d ikwere nation as a whole cos they just showed d highest level of backwardness, illitracy, premitiveness, ignorance, lack of wisdom, here in england if u kill a dog d case is taken as if it were a human n u will be jailed 4 it nobody is guilty until proven by a court of jurisdiction beyond resonable doubt pls let us follow this matter wit wisdom plus or minus Life goes on let justice take its course Aluta continua Victory Long live nigeria Long live Rivers state Cheers mates.

  20. as a uniport student i’m ashamed 2 say that that friday when the news came 2 us we were shocked by the cruelty of the aluu indigenes @ our comrades who lived nearby who didn’t inform us until 1pm. We patiently waited 4 action but first the sch denied they were students & the sug kept quiet. It was only when their parents friends classmates started talking, the pix & video circulated & people realised the aluu4 were not poor people’s children that the tune changed. Uniport students are not happy at all this is only the beginning. If the aluu4 had been poor people’s children wd politicians police lawyers talk? What of the mubi40, pupils students undergraduates who are being killed all over the country? The aluu4 are symbols of what nigerian youths are suffering, the youth must say enough is enough. Aluu must not know peace again i ask y are prominent aluu indigenes quiet?

  21. if am allowed to speak to my fellow collegues in uniport,i will say if allu community no nothing but killing of our colleague den, burn down aluu community make sure is ratio four to four and if any law enforcement agent come into contact dey dem self sud be burn down, bcos am sure dey knew about the street parade by as at the time the incident had not gotten to the stage of burning,or better still killing or brutal beating.if aluu community believe in JUNGLE JUTICE then let also take that part with them and lay down to them what JUNGLE JUSTICE LOOK LIKE SO THAT OTHER COMMUNITY DONT ENGAGE IN IT ANY MORE IN THIS COUNTRY.I BELIEVE THAT THE GOVERNMENT ANd THAT COMUNITY WILL HEAR US BETTER.AND TO MR PRESIDENT HE IS IN POSITION TO SPEAK OUT ON THIS MATTER IS NO MORE ISSUE OF STUDENT RAMPAGE IS NATIONAL ISSUE, IF HE DOESNT WANT A TOTAL BURN DOWN OF THAT COMMUNITY AND BRING TO BOOK QUICKLY THOSE INVOLVE BEFORE THE YOUTH OF NIGERIA WILL TAKE CHARGE. IF DIPLOMATIC MEASURE IS NOT Taken.
    GREAT NIGERIA STUDENT
    ALLUTA CONTINUA

  24. We have to campaign to name streets and roads after our colleagues so their memory will never be forgotten! As for aluu/ekwere nation you and you generations unborn will continue to die premature deaths! You will never give birth to male children again! You shall remain cursed for eternity! I always heard that the ekwere people are the most wicked people on earth since when I was a child, this has confirmed those stories!! Pls kill all of them! Women and children included! They say the sins of the fathers shall be visited on the children also! I weep for this country but we have to let people know that nobody has monopoly of violence, this is war and its only after the village has been sacked and killed in defeat that we can dialouge! This is also a warning to boko haram! Stop your killings or else nigerians will march to your city also! You want fight abi? Now you shall have it!!

  31. I pray that the kind of hatered that engulfed the perpetrators of the barbaric crime doesn’t follow the uniport students in committing more sin and loss of anymore innocent life! Even those of the Aluu community who r innocent don’t deserve to die from this! Those directly responsible should be punished by LAW and for the rest of the Aluu peeps should be paid back with LOVE!!! The same love that Jesus preached abt!!! My fellow students!!!! Let’s show the world that we r not like them!!! We r better than burning down homes! Love yur neighbor regardless! And forgive!!!! But my shout out to the police/law enforcement agency on this matter is to please let justice be done and don’t let us peace loving citizens look bad!!!
