How I Was Handcuffed, Tied To Mast – Man Brutalized By FRSC Officials

Some days ago we brought you the story of a Nigerian that was allegedly brutalized by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps. Today, we serve you details that led to his man-handling.

The victim, Mr. Gbolahan Olayinka, while narrating what happened on that day – Tuesday, October 23, 2012, claimed that the incident transpired at Oshodi where he’d gone to buy fuel for his official car. He parked at a point the station manager instructed – which was not on the road, but the officials of FRSC insisted was obstructing other road users.

In the process, one of the three FRSC men at the scene thereafter attempted to deflate his tyre but he tried to restrain him.

Olayinka said, “I went to Mobil Filling Station, Oshodi to buy fuel. Suddenly, one FRSC official made attempt to deflate my official car tyre.

“When I asked him why he was trying to do that, he said the side I parked my car was causing obstruction. I found it funny because it was untrue. Moreover, the filling station manager, who is a customer of our company, instructed my driver to park at the location.”

He said other officers, who felt he was preventing their colleague from “doing his work” pounced on him and gave him the beating of his life.

Olayinka said, “After beating, kicking and slapping me, they whisked me away from the filling station to the FRSC station almost opposite.

“There, they handcuffed me and tied me to a telecommunication mast. At this place, other members came to kick and slap me at the stake.”

He said that his mobile phone was seized, adding, “thereafter, I was compelled to write a letter of apology to them as the only condition to release me.”

Lagos State Sector Commander, FRSC, Mr. Nseobong Charles Akpabio, acknowleged receipt of the matter and had set up a committee to investigate the matter.

“The man in question was in my office yesterday (Monday). Immediately, I set up a disciplinary committee to investigate the matter. After the investigation, we will make the outcome public,” the sector commander assured.

  1. I’m sorry to say bt Mr. Emaka Uzo….u seem to ß living in oblivion, inundated by the state of the ‘Para-military’ in nigeria, this so called pple….FRSC,Nigerian Police Service(not Force),Nigerian Customs Service(not force alse),seem not to understand what they stand for and its pple like you dat giv em dis impression, the victim of this ‘show of power’ happens to ß a person i knw,and by all standards he is a law abiding citizen
What give d FRSC right to physically abuse nigerians?
They are para-military…..they cant just think because they are uniformed, they can abuse nigerians anyhow, this is unnacceptable, and i assure you,wit this attitude u’ve got, they’ll sure one day man-handle you as he was man-handled cos u seem nt to knw ur basic right
They are Federal Road Safety Officials, not LASTMA who shld monitor who’s obstructing traffic and Who’s not,all they need to do is check if he had all safety measures in place for a standard road user,nt brutalise him
This is the height of disregard of abiding rules and regulatory of a body in nigeria, and i personally think a deep ‘look into’ is necessary and all. Findings made public….thus jailing the erring officers according to the rule of law!
