Eko 2012: 56,000 Condoms Distributed

The medical sub-committee of Eko 2012 Sports Festival has distributed thousands of condoms to athletes, coaches and technical officials participating in the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival.

As at Monday over 35,000 male and 21,000 female condoms had been given out at the various centres including Rowe Park Sports Complex, YABATECH, UNILAG, the National Stadium.

In 2004, the IOC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, agreeing to use its leverage to help combat the dreaded AIDS/HIV. Since then condoms have been distributed to athletes, coaches and technical officials at big events like the Olympics, and even the All African Games.

Gathering of youths can brew the temptation of creating bonds that go beyond mere friendships, hence the decision of sports bodies to distribute condoms at events.

An official at the UNILAG sports complex confirmed, “There are thousands of condoms for whoever cares.”
