In a tale of mixed fortunes, authorities of the Nigerian Army have retired several of its senior officers from service. This is coming in the wake of the approval of 150 top officers for promotion by the Army Council on Tuesday.
It was learnt that this recent exercise affected mostly officers in the top brass such as generals, Colonels as well as some other mid-cadre officers.
While dispeling the notion in certain quarters that the retirement had ethnic or religious colouration, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Koleosho, confirmed that the exercise was routine as well as regular aspects of the administration of the army at the end of the year.
He said, “It is true; it is a routine exercise. It happens everywhere and the Nigerian Army is not an exception.
“As you are promoting, you are also retiring, it is routine. It is normal for some people to go home at the end of the year. Retirement, recruitment and posting are regular features in the Army.”
The list of those retired was not published as we gathered that the army had taken a decision not to make it public because of the tendency of some persons to read religious and ethnic meaning into the exercise.
Already, those affected have been sent letters of disengagement.
