Malawi’s government has invited bids for its 14-seat presidential jet (a Dassault Falcon 900EX), which is being sold off as part of cost-cutting measures. The office of President Joyce Banda says the plane will be sold to the highest bidder with proceeds from the sale used to provide basic services for the country’s poor..Her predecessor, the late Bingu wa Mutharika, was strongly criticised for buying the jet five years ago at a cost of about $13.3m (£8.5m).

Donors cut aid to Malawi by $4.4 million after the purchase.

Mrs Banda has refused to travel in the jet since she took office last April, following Mr Mutharika’s unexpected death.

  1. wot a pity 4 the poor frm a president…. but here even d pastors dat surposes to stand 4 d poor spend as much as 46milion dolar in one jet nd his university is d costliest even wen d pple ar deceived to pay tyte nd oferin all in d name of givin to god only to end up later as individual busines…let me not talk about hw many jets our govnors hav in their fleets of jet nd refineries nd modern hospitals they hav abroad nd @ d end every one is shoutin bkharam while our leaders ar worse dan d devil itself

  2. The news that Malawi is selling her presidential jet to provide for their poor is a godly idea Naija should emulate.

  3. She is indeed a philantrophist

  4. We have over 250 private jets in nigeria,by individuals while the governors and president has fleets eg suntai of taraba and co, may God have mercy on nigeria,

  5. President Banda has been a grass-root oriented politician. At a time, when our own president is proposing over#16bn for new banquet hall- her malawian counterpart is making sacrifices for the sake of the have-not in malawi. Ironically, President Banda had shoes, school bags & didn’t trekked to school as a student.

  6. If a president decided to sell her official jet because of the welfarism of her people,it means she is a good welfarist and not autocrat and saddist claiming democrat, extravagantly exhausting the nation’s fund for their livelyhood and selfish desires.
