Started in the United States in 1909 (the original date was not march 8), the International Women’s Day was a socialist idea which had on its agenda, among other things, the promotion of equal rights for the genders, hence a political undertone was also involved. It was originally called the International Working Women’s Day.

Over the years, and in different parts of the world, the celebration of this day ranged from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements.

The selection of the current date of March 8th came following the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The state council had proclaimed on December 23 that March 8 would be made an official holiday with women in China given a half-day off. But the date would not be globally accepted until 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.

As we celebrate the day, it is an opportunity to show some extra love for the women in our lives. Take a moment out today to do this. You can start by just giving them a special shout out here; make them feel loved, appreciated, special… because they truly are.
