About 12 robbers in the early hours of yesterday stormed a new generation bank at Iju Ishaga, killing two policemen during a gun battle reported to have lasted 15 minutes.

The Police however said only one of their men was killed, while a member of the gang was also killed in the shootout.

The police couldn’t stop their mission as the armed gang reportedly carted away an undisclosed amount of money.

According to reports, the bandits stormed the bank at about 3 a.m. in two vehicles. Some of them remained outside, heavily armed and ready to shoot at intruders. Others scaled the fence and tied the night guards at the bank, after which they fired some shots at the Automated Teller Machine, ATM.

As if they cared less about who could hear the gunshots which alerted some policemen on patrol around the area, they were battle ready and opened fire on the policemen who reportedly raced to the scene after hearing the shots fired.

The gun battle led to the death of two policemen, one of them identified as Inspector Nafiu.

Minutes later, two Amoured Personnel Carriers and combined teams of conventional and Mobile Policemen reportedly drafted from Area ‘G’ Command, Ogba, arrived the scene, but the robbers had fled.

A management staff of the affected bank’s headquarters confirmed the incident, saying the robbers were unable to break into the vault.
