Tottenham Hotspur succeeded in closing the gap between them and Arsenal to one point as Chelsea are one win away from next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea were the better team of the night with Gareth Bale anonymous, silenced by Cesar Azpilicueta and isolated. It took two outstanding performances from the West London club, in person of Juan Mata and Oscar to register the first goal.

Ten minutes into the game, Juan Mata took a corner from the right, won by Gary Cahill, whose header was traveling wide before Oscar popped up at the far post to head it in from a close range.

Tottenham hit back, against the run of play, after 26 minutes with a superb effort from their Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Ramires lost possession- after regaining Eden Hazard’s- to Adebayor inside his own area. The Togolese ran with the ball and succeeded in taking it into Chelsea’s half after mustering a purposeful and powerful effort. The four Chelsea defenders beat the retreat, however, no one dare ran to the striker who neared the opposition penalty area, at which point he lifted the most delightful chip over a curiously helpless Petr Cech.

Order was restored by a more outstanding work by Oscar and Fernando Torres. The pair combined on the right flank, the Spaniard heading inside, before feeding the ball into the path of Ramires, who needed no second invitation, hitting it low in his stride and past the Hugo Lloris.

At 2-1 up Chelsea should have ruthlessly put Tottenham away; they had the chances, but let it slip. Their inability to silence the visitors allowed Gylfi Sigurdsson to net an equaliser.

Tom Huddlestone passed to Benoit Assou- Ekotto on the left and he struck a curling ball in for Adebayor. A volleyed back- heel flick later and the ball was at the feet of substitute Sigurdsson. He curled his low shot past Cech to bring Tottenham back to business.

Nevertheless, Tottenham will be capitalising on the best combination of results to make it to next season’s Champions League with two matches left. Chelsea are a win away from the same faith, while the remaining spot is going to be a North London affair. It was satisfactory Andre Villas- Boas’ men didn’t lose on the night.
