A suicide bomber has blown himself up in a Shi’ite mosque north of Baghdad, killing at least 15 people and wounding 31 others, officials said, updating an earlier toll.

Initial reports had said at least four people died and 20 were wounded.

The attacker struck the Al-Rahman mosque in the predominantly Sunni town of Taji, just north of the capital, an interior ministry official and a medical source said.

Sectarian clashes and attacks have become more prominent in recent times as the attacks have been targeted at worship centres in the past with attacks on Shi’ite mosques usually traced to Sunni Islamists, and attacks on Sunni formations usually blamed on the Shi’ite sect.
