At least 89 persons have been arraigned by the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, zone 5, for violating traffic rules in Delta State, as part of its effort to reduce the rate of accidents on Nigerian roads.

Seventy-eight out of the 89 traffic violators who were arraigned before a mobile Magistrate court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Olunwa at Alishime, a boundary town between Edo and Delta state, were convicted with an option of fine, while the others were discharged and acquitted.

Assistant Corps Marshal, ACM in-charge of the zone, Mr Ayo Olaniran said the special operation code-named ‘Operation Shield’ was designed by the commission as a special intervention to shield road users from the hazards of roads especially crashes and the attendant injuries and fatalities.

According to him, “of the 273 vehicles that were stopped during the week-long exercise, 188 were booked for offences ranging from seat belt violation, overspeeding, overloading, light and sign violation and others,” adding that; “most of the motorists were allowed to go after they were cautioned and educated.

“And in line with our strategic objective for the year and in line with the UN decade of action on road safety which is that every member of the UN should work towards reducing road crashes by 50%, the FRSC is doing all it can to ensure that crashes are reduced to the barest minimum as well as the injuries and fatality.”
