Team Nigeria’s delegation to the Taekwondo Austrian and Swiss Opens earlier in June clinched three medals.

The Nigerian contingent won one gold and one silver at the Austrian Open, both medals won by the Chukwumerije brothers, and a bronze medal at the Swiss Open.

The Chukwumerije brothers- Chika Chukwumerije and Uche Chukwumerije- joined by Sunday Onofie, Joy Kiator and Segun Olushola represented the country at the championships.

The trip to the Austrian and Swiss Open was facilitated by Chika Chukwumerije Sports Foundation (CCSF).

“During the first tournament on the 1st and 2nd of June, we won a Gold and a Silver,” Chika said on presenting the medals to the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.

“Two of the athletes got to the quarter-final and the other one got to the second round. It was a good outing.”

According to Chika, the team only won a bronze medal at the Swiss Open with only four athletes competing for the country.

He commended the Ministry of Sports for its support to the Taekwondo Federation.

“Our commitment is to give equal opportunity to all federations to prove themselves and give equal opportunity to all sports to develop,” Minister of Sports, Abdullahi responded.

The minister urged the athletes to wax on stronger and not dwell on their achievement.

“We have the All Africa Games coming up. It also means that you have a longer opportunity to start preparing for the Olympics,” Abdullahi said.
