Bride Irini Georgiou’s flaming awful start to her marriage ended with a tender moment – when the fire brigade drove her to church.

The 23-year-old primary teacher was feeling gown and out when her classic wedding car burst into flames.

But the fire crew who put out the blaze rushed her to the ceremony in their fire tender.

As groom Phillip Critoph, 25, waited with 200 guests at Christ Church Little Heath, in Potters Bar, Herts, Irini’s horrified bridesmaids watched the 1969 Plymouth Barracuda go up when she and her dad set off from Goffs Oak.

Smoke poured from the engine, the car’s horn began blaring and flames appeared under the bonnet.

But the fire crew soon extinguished the blaze and rescued cases of champagne from the boot.

After checking with their control room, they rushed Irini and her property-dealer dad Michael Georgiou to the church.

The ceremony went ahead after a 30-minute delay.

Mr Georgiou said: “They were so wonderful. Irini was over the moon. It made everyone smile.”

The couple are now on honeymoon in Rhodes.
