Lyon accepted Newcastle’s £8m for Gomis, who scored 20 goals in 44 games last season, subject to agreement on personal terms.

On completion of the move, he would become Newcastle’s first summers signing with talks to land another Frenchman Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan deal ongoing.

Gomis came through the youth ranks at lower league outfit Sporting Toulon Var before moving to St Etienne in 2000 aged 15.

In July 2009, the striker joined Lyon from St Etienne in a deal worth £13m and has spent the last four seasons with the Ligue 1 club.

Gomis has 12 caps for the French national team and has scored three goals, including a brace on his international debut in a friendly against Ecuador in May 2008.
