The former world number one Sharapova, currently the richest female athlete in the world, has lodged an enquiry with the Supreme Court of Florida over a ‘conditional’ name change on the understanding her name will revert back after the tournament concludes.

Sharapova is planning the name change to try to advertise her range of sweets which she spent over £300,000 to set up.

According to The Times, Sharapova’s outfit for the tournament held at Flushing Meadows from August 26 to September 9 will carry the logo of her company, a pair of red lips.

The Russian may still need the permission of the grand slam committee but if granted, expect her to be introduced and addressed as Miss Sugarpova as scores would also be read out in favour of her new moniker.
