The wanton killings and destruction of property in Nasarawa State has continued with impunity because the perpetrators have never been caught and punished, says the Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu.
Mr. Shehu, who was posted to the troubled state in the wake of the May 7 massacre of about 74 security agents in Alakyo by members of the Ombatse cult group, told a team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that the killing of security operatives was only a part of the bigger problem in the state.
He described Nasarawa’s security situation as “so unique,” adding, “It is not happening anywhere. It’s too bad.”
He added: “Besides the incident in Toto (Igbira and Bassa killings) in 1999, where people were punished, for all these crises we are having now, nobody has been punished. Not even a single person has been punished for all the killings, crises”.
The NHRC team was led to Lafia, the state capital by its Director of Conflicts Resolution, Ethics and Good Governance Mrs. Tina Nwodo.
Earlier, the commission’s officials told the police chief that they were in the state to commiserate with security agencies over the May 7 incident as well as familiarize themselves with the crises in the state.
