A faction of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) led by Senator Rufai Hanga has inspite of its pending court case, finally pulled out of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the newly registered Peoples’ Democratic Movement (PDM).

Leading members of the faction represented by their the national, state, local government and ward officers across the country to PDM at a ceremony in Abuja, Senator Hanga explained that the decision to join PDM was reached after extensive consultations with his members over the past few months.

“With the purported merger of our defunct party, CPC and its takeover by another called the All Progressive Congress (APC), we are aware that our legal struggle is still lingering. Even so, we came into Abuja yesterday, Monday, the 7th day of October, 2013, expecting judgment to be delivered in our case. Unfortunately however, the court had in its wisdom deferred judgment until next Monday.

“In view of this,  we have consulted widely and with our members in every chapter, ward, LGAs and states across the country and obtained the mandate of our followers to move en masse in alliance with Peoples’ Democratic Movement (PDM) beginning from now,” he said.

He noted that the national leadership of his faction decided to take destiny into its own hands by defecting to PDM in order not to play into the hands of those he described as “destructive and undemocratic forces”, whose actions compelled them to seek redress in court.

Senator Hanga said the decision of his faction to join PDM was informed by the fact that the party has track record of internal democracy, rule of law and organizational discipline adding that the defection has provided them the opportunity to start afresh and a level playing field in politics having experienced impunity and dictatorship at the highest level in the CPC.

He stated that his faction has a firm belief in PDM’s manifesto, shares in its commitment to the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria as well as its aspiration to open up economic opportunities for all Nigerians.

He, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to seize the opportunity provided them by INEC through the registration of PDM to join the party in order to save the nation from the “grip of fair-weather democrats” for socio-economic development.
