National Conference’s A Colossal Waste Of Resources, Says Kwankwaso

rabiu_kwankwaso_660171512Kano State Governor, Engr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has flayed calls for a National Conference, saying that rather than unite Nigerians, it will be a ‘Pandora’s Box’ that will eventually create disunity.

Kwankwaso, who was speaking in a media chat to mark the country’s 53 years independence anniversary, noted that the conference will not only be a waste of time, but is also unconstitutional.

He explained that with the existence of the National Assembly, there was no need for such conference as it amounts to a total duplication of the lawmakers’ mandates.

“In my opinion, the National Conference is a colossal waste of resources that would have been used to solve the socio-economic problems bedeviling the progress of our country”, adding that, “If properly utilized, this resources that would have been spent in organizing the conference would be useful if channeled to other human development areas”.

Governor Kwankwaso recalled that, “Such conference had held during Obasanjo and Abacha regimes and nothing happened after that” and advised those thinking that Nigeria will break-up to stop wasting their time because “the nation will remain indivisible, no matter the pressure”.

On the current impasse in the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, which led to its split in August, the governor, who is one of the arrowheads of the splinter faction known as “New PDP”, maintained that the crisis is associated with agitations for good governance obtained in real democracy just as he pointed out that the meeting slated for 7th October will be very crucial.

He said that the G7 governors will attend the meeting and they were ready to defend their positions.

Meanwhile, the “New PDP” in a statement issued on Wednesday by its publicity secretary, Chukwuemeka Eze, asked for a postponement of the earlier scheduled October 7 meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan.

Eze said the decision to seek a postponement was due to a clash in date of the proposed peace talks with this year’s Muslim pilgrimage, in which most of the political actors, including the faction’s chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje will be performing the hajj.
