Sanctions would be imposed on any hospital that refuses to admit and provide medical assistance to road accidents’ victims, according to the officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
The FRSC Benin Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO), Mr Nseobong Akpabio, whose command comprises Edo, Delta and Anambra states, briefed the journalists on Monday in Benin.
He said 24-hour patrol code ‘Operation Octopus’ has commenced on Friday and will run for 15 days.
During the said period, the ZCO explained, officials would patrol three accident-prone corridors to ensure that road users complied with traffic regulations.
The corridors are the Benin-Asaba, Benin-Auchi and Onitsha-Oweeri expressways, and “FRSC officials are also expected to carry out aggressive public enlightenment” there.
Trained FRSC medical personnel, several ambulances would be on standby to attend to emergency situations.
“And I want to say that FRSC will sanction any hospital that rejects and refuses to attend to accident victims,” the official stressed.
The FRSC boss warned road users, especially motorists, to avoid seat belt violation, speeding and dangerous driving, saying his officers will set up mobile courts along these corridors to “try erring motorists”.
