Former Bayern Chief Begins Jail Term

Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness begins a three-and-a-half-year jail sentence for tax evasion, his lawyers have disclosed.

The former World Cup-winning striker is serving his sentence at Landsberg Lech Prison in Southern Germany.

The 62-year-old was found guilty of defrauding tax authorities of £22.5m in March.

A court in the Southern city of Munich found Hoeness guilty of “seven serious counts of tax evasion”.

He chose not to appeal against his convictions and resigned as president of his country’s largest club.

Hoeness helped Germany win the 1972 European Championship and the World Cup two years later.
