Eaglets Edge DR Congo to a Narrow Win in Kinshasa

Nigeria Under-17 men’s national team defeated the DR Congo by 1-0 margin in an Africa Junior Championship second round qualifier on Saturday.

On-form Victor Osimhen scored early into the encounter played at the Tata Samuel Stadium.

Osimhen headed directly into the net from Usman Abbas’ one-time pass on 13 minutes following the latter’s superb run on the left wing.

The Golden Eaglets could have scored more goals, but couldn’t take their chances.

Nigeria almost doubled their lead three minutes to the interval, when skipper Kelechi Nwakali’s well struck free-kick ricocheted off the woodwork.

The return leg will be played in Calabar in two weeks’ time and the winners of the tie face the overall winners of the game between Ethiopia and Gabon.

Gabon forced the East Africans to a goalless draw in Addis Ababa.

The 2015 Africa U-17 Championship is billed for Nigeria in February.
