Moro Gives Contractor Handling New Koton-Karfe Prison Two Weeks To Complete Project

koton karfe prisonsThe Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, has ordered the contractor handling the Koton-Karfe medium Prison, to complete work on the project in two weeks or risk termination of the contract.

The Minister made this position known yesterday when he visited the facility to assess the level of damage done to it during the jail break on Sunday night which allowed 144 inmates to escape.

The Nigeria Prisons Service, however, said it had re-arrested 12 of the escaped inmates.

While conducting journalists round the medium prison, which is under construction, the minister said: “Given the level of work that have been done here and given the circumstances at which we found ourselves, I have given out the ultimatum of two weeks within which the contract for this medium prison should be completed”.

The contract for the prison was awarded in 1981 by the Alhaji Shehu Shagari administration but was abandoned by successive governments. However, the contract was re-awarded in early 2014 following a jail break by suspected Boko Haram gunmen.

Speaking on the attack on the Koton-Karfe prison, Moro expressed dismay that hoodlums were targeting the prison, which has now experienced two jail breaks within a space of two years.
