Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Yero, yesterday, pledged to raise the salaries of district heads in the state to enhance their performance.

The monthly salary of a district head is about N14,000 which is below the national minimum wage, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Yero made the pledge when he paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Malam Zubairu Jubril, as part of his election campaign.

He said that as important pillars of leadership at the community level, the district heads deserved to have a living wage that would encourage them in their work.

The governor also acknowledged the security problems the area was facing and assured that the government would continue to protect the lives and properties of all people living in the state. The Local Government Area had for years suffered attacks by criminal gangs, which the government had seemed helpless to end as it has continued to lead to loss of lives and properties. Yero however promised that this will change if he returns as governor of the state.

He however advised the people of the area to eschew violence during and after the elections, just as he thanked the Emirate Council for its invaluable support to the administration.

Yero became governor of Kaduna State in 2012, following the death of Governor Patrick Yakowa on 15 December 2012. The governor died in a helicopter crash along with the former National Security Adviser Gen. Owoye Andrew Azazi (rtd), while flying from Bayelsa state to Port Harcourt. They were returning from the funeral of Oronto Douglas’ father in Beyelsa state.

Yero, who was then the deputy governor, was sworn-in the following day as the state’s new governor by the state Chief Judge, Justice Rahila Cudjo. The February election will therefore be the first time he is official running for the office of the governor.
