Jonathan Can Sack Jega If He Wants, Heavens Will Not Fall – Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday said that President Goodluck Jonathan has the prerogative power to ask the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega to proceed on terminal leave, saying no one can question him on this.

“President Goodluck Jonathan can sack Jega if he wishes and if he does, heavens will not fall … It is on record that Prof Maurice Iwu was asked to proceed on terminal leave two months to the end of his tenure Is Jega not a beneficiary of Iwu’s removal? So if Iwu was asked to go on terminal leave before the expiration of his tenure for Jega to assume office, what difference does it make if Jega too is asked to proceed on terminal leave before the expiration of his tenure?” Fayose queried in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti, yesterday and signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka.

The “removal of Jega and any other appointee of the Federal Government was a prerogative of the president, which no one can question, provided laid down rules are followed.”

According to Fayose, members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) who are opposed to the removal of Jega have their own agenda. He asked them to stop behaving as if Nigeria belonged to the party.

He condemned members of the party for turning themselves into Jega’s defender, urging Nigerians to take note of their antics.

  1. I completely agree with what Fayose is saying. I think on a serious note, the APC has something they are cooking with Jega. That is what is informing all the threats of violence that even the Speaker of the House of Representative, Hon. Tambuwah shamefully advocated. I agree that Jega should be asked to proceed on terminal leave, just like Prof. Iwu. He has lost the pedigree to conduct a free and fair election with all the happening in the last 6 months. I believe seriously that Jega has been compromised. There are clear signs to this.

    • King Yonge, I remind you of the FACT that Nigeria and everything therein is not Jonathan’s property. Nigeria is not governed (though it appears to be ruled) by anyone’s whims but by spelt out laws and rules. Using the perfidy of a prior misdeed as basis for another one planned or executed later is simply contrary to reason. If we didn’t need laws but relied on and waited upon the goodwill of a ‘ruler’, why call our system a democracy, one of whose beacons is a system based on laws and set out rules rather than the pleasure of a ruler?
The law is very clear on how to handle persons in positions such as Jega’s (note that this includes the CBN governor) in order to assure the effectiveness of their capacities in the positions they occupy and not be playthings of anyone, including their appointer – in this case the president.
Lastly, any wonder why Fayose has been reckless and lawless? Or do you support his actions against lawful conduct?

  2. Stupit you are @ king yonge…jega is going no where, nd perhaps they put him there at the first place’ so let them allow him finish his tenure! Jega has realized that rigging election will push the Nation on his kneels so he said he will gonna use Card readers nation wide, nd the PDPs have seen Gen.Buhari with 84%votes acros the country. That’s the reason why they wanna bring someone who will on any accont announce GEJ is the winner, nd could not be possible. Jega must Stay
