Mourinho Guarantees Terry Will Get Contract Extension

Jose Mourinho has “guaranteed” that Chelsea skipper, John Terry will remain at Stamford Bridge for at least another season.

The retired England international, 34, whose contract expires at the end of the current campaign, remains a key figure at the west London club. He underlined his continued relevance to the Premier League leaders in Sunday’s Capital One Cup triumph against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium, where he grabbed the opener.

Terry, in a recent interview, expressed his determination at ensuring he enjoys a successful climax to his Blues career by continuing to prove critics wrong.

Mourinho, who won his first trophy of his second spell at the weekend, has now indicated that Chelsea and Terry would agree on a new deal before the end of the season.

“I can guarantee, because I know what my board and the player tells me, he is going to get his new contract,” the Portuguese, 52, said in his press conference ahead of Wednesday’s trip to West Ham United.

“All of these big guys are difficult to replace but you have to think what next and I think that is the best way to do things.”

Terry has won 68 per cent of his tackles and 70 per cent of his aerial and ground duels in his 26 Premier League appearances this season. He has scored two times and completed a staggering 2,880 minutes of first-team football.

On replacing the one-club centre-back when he finally decided to call time on his Chelsea career, Mourinho added: “We can take our time because John is proving again this season that he is a player for (many) years.

“When I came back last year, he was coming from a difficult period. Last season, he was very good. This season, even better than last season.

“He has time to enjoy his football with us and he gives us time to think about what next.”
