Leon Balogun’s Darmstadt Secure Bundesliga Promotion

Nigeria international, Leon Balogun, and SV Darmstadt 98 sealed German top-flight promotion on Sunday, after finishing as runners-up in Bundesliga 2.

It is a second promotion on the bounce for the coach Dirk Schuster’s side, who- just last season- were playing in the third division.

Sunday, 24 May, 2014 will go down the anal of Datmstadt history for yet another important reason as the ‘City of Science’ finally have a representative in the world renowned Bundesliga for a first time in over three decades.

The superb feat came after their 1-0 victory over relegation threatened St. Pauli, courtesy of Tobias Kempe’s direct free-kick from distance.

It was nonetheless a hard-earned reward for the side’s resillience, especially coming against an opposition who also needed to win to scrape through relegation in the Bundesliga 2.

Neither side shed tears on the eventful afternoon at the Stadion am Bollenfalltor as results elsewhere went in favour of the Hamburg side.

Balogun, who joined ‘The Lillies’ last summer, now have every course to hold out for a new contract at the same outfit, having seen out his previous season-long deal.
