Although the Muslim faithful are in the Holy month of Ramadan, Islamist group, Boko Haram were not curbed from carrying out attacks as they shot and killed nearly 100 Muslims praying in mosques in Kukawa, 180 kilometers northeast of Maiduguri, Borno State shortly before iftar on Wednesday.

The attack happened after the militants struck a village 35 kilometers away where they killed another 48 men and boys, the Associated Press reports, citing witnesses.

The gunmen killed 97 people, mainly men, according to said self-defense spokesman Abbas Gava. A senior government official also confirmed the killings to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity as he was not allowed to speak to journalists.

Boko Haram had over years of its existence defiled mosques and killed during the holy month of Ramadan, with a strong belief that Muslims attacked practice a moderate form of Islam.

The sect was also said to have invaded Mussaram on Tuesday night where it killed nearly 50 men and boys.

“A total of 48 males died on the spot while 17 others escaped with serious injuries,” said Maidugu Bida, a self-defense official based in nearby village Monguno. He said he helped bury the dead.

A day earlier (Monday), two suicide bombers had blown themselves up in a village outside Maiduguri, about 60 minutes before the arrival of Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo whom some believe might have been the bombers’ target. He visited some of the peopel displaced by insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast.

The six-year-old insurgency has led to over 15,000 deaths and has displaced more than 1.5 million people.
