Obiano Denies Blaming Obi, Jonathan For Transfer Of Boko Haram Detainees To Anambra Prisons

willie_obianoThe Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has reacted to reports in a section of the media on Friday regarding the transfer of Boko Haram suspects from the Northeastern part of the country to Ekwulobia Prisons in Anambra.

According to the reports, Gov. Obiano confirmed the presence of the Boko Haram detainees in the state but absolved his administration, saying the transfer took place under the immediate past administrations of Mr. Peter Obi and Goodluck Jonathan.

The governor, however, denied making any comments on the highly vexatious issue and referred interested members of the public to two press statements issued on Sunday, June 28, 2015 and Wednesday July 1, 2015, where his position was properly articulated.

“In both statements, his message was simple – he re-assured Ndi Anambra that he was on top of the situation and that he was speaking with the relevant authorities to achieve a peaceful resolution of the issue. Governor Obiano’s commitment to this extremely sensitive issue remains the same”, a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Assistant on Media, James Eze reads in part.

Gov. Obiano stressed that he is conscious of the strong feelings provoked by Boko Haram among Ndi Anambra and the people of the South East and vowed to never use the matter, which he described as a “subject of pain and anguish”, to play politics.

“Those who are not held back by any moral considerations in their pursuit of power, cheap popularity and vendetta are free to play with the agony of the people for their narrow interests. But for Obiano, certain things are bigger than politics”, Eze said.

The governor, therefore, pleaded with Ndi Anambra to go about their normal businesses while he continues to engage the relevant authorities on the matter.
