Abuja Bombings: Immigration Beefs Up Security, Border Patrol In Kano

Abuja-bombingFollowing the recent coordinated bomb attacks in Abuja, the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kano State Command, has beefed up security around the state by setting up check-points at major entry points to prevent any attempt to infiltrate the state by insurgents.

The new Comptroller of Immigration, Kano State Command, Malam Sadiq Baba Shehuri, who addressed a press conference on Wednesday, said the measure became necessary in view of the security challenge in the country, noting that there was no better time to tighten up security in the state than now.

“Initially, we thought it was restricted to the North-East, but you can bear me witness that it is no longer restricted to the area following the attacks that were launched at Kuje and Nyanya in Abuja”, he said.

The Comptroller added that the command has designed a very aggressive border patrol policy and has also introduced what he called radical approach to its patrol, particularly in terms of monitoring influx of illegal immigrants to the state.

He said: “Despite the fact that Kano is not a border state, with the full knowledge of the Service Commission, the National Security Adviser and our Service Headquarters we have set up some check points along the major roads leading into the state capital like Maiduguri road, Katsina road and Gwarzo road to prevent any attempt to infiltrate Kano state”.

Shehuri added: “We have witnessed many of such attacks in Kano. It happened at our Passport Office and at the Mosque. It even happened at the market place. We want to make sure that we have very aggressive border patrol techniques”.

The immigration boss disclosed that some specially trained personnel of the Command now wear badges, to identify them as Border Corps to handle any situation.

“We are also in tune and operating in the same frequency with the federal government in terms of the zero tolerance approach to corruption”, the comptroller said.
