Appeal Court Upholds Umahi’s Election As Governor Of Ebonyi

David UmahiThe Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu on Friday upheld the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Dave Umahi’s election as Governpr of Ebonyi State.

The Labour Party gubernatorial candidate, Chief Edward Nkwegu, had approached the appellate court, to challenge the election petition tribunal’s judgment that dismissed his petition against Umahi’s declaration as winner of the April 11 governorship election in the state.

The tribunal held that the LP candidate’s petition lacked merit and he also failed to prove allegations of corrupt practices and criminalities as contained in the petition.

Dissatisfied with the judgment of the tribunal, Nkwegu proceeded to the court of appeal sitting in Enugu to challenge the verdict.

In the appeal filed by his counsel, Chief U.N Udechukwu (SAN), Nkwegu prayed the court to set aside the judgment of the tribunal, describing the verdict as a grave error of law.

He also urged the court to annul the election of Umahi with fresh election conducted, adding that the governorship election was marred by widespread irregularities.
