Some security scanners in some airports across the country are not working, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said.

The acting managing director of FAAN, Salihu Domuno, made this known recently when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, for the 2016 budget defense of the agency.

The chairperson of the committee, Rep Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (PDP, Abia), raised the concern about faulty scanners during the budget defense, saying that on going through the 2016 budget of FAAN, she expected to see an allocation for the repair or replacement of such security scanning machines for the airports, but there was no such provision.

In his response, Domuno said FAAN was in the process of engaging the suppliers of the scanners to maintain them.

He said: “We have asked them to tell us the parts that are needed for maintenance, because the bills they are giving us are very high and we are also looking at training some of our staff to do the maintenance, because if you don’t have in-house technicians, you continue to spend more money”.

The committee also queried why the construction of FAAN corporate office kept appearing in the budget every year.

The FAAN boss revealed that the project was never started, despite the budgetary allocations for it over the years.
