Buhari, Jonathan ‘Secret Meeting’ In London Did Not Happen

Despite reports claiming that President Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan held secret meetings in London, the government of the United Kingdom denied the claims.

Muhammadu Buhari is on medical leave in the UK and his trip has coincided with former President Goodluck Jonathan’s holiday in London. Some newspapers had reported that the meeting was in order to get the former President to wade into the current unrest in Nigeria’s Niger delta region.

A terse statement issued by the Press Officer of the British High Commission in Abuja, Joe Abuku reads:

“Media reports suggesting that the British government has set up a meeting with President Buhari, former President Jonathan and representatives of Niger Delta groups to discuss a solution to recent violence in the Niger Delta region are incorrect.
“We are aware that President Buhari is currently in London seeking medical attention. We are not aware of any meetings on the Niger Delta while he is there”
