The Nigerian army has debunked claims that Boko Haram insurgents hoisted their flag in three villages in Borno state.

Earlier reports hadĀ claimed that the Islamist militants overran villages of Kubirivour, Boftari and Kuburmbalah and killed at least eight people during their raid.

Reports also claimed that the militants retook control of the Malam Fatori town, on the Nigeria-Niger border, days after the army had recaptured the town.

However, Nigerian Army spokesperson Col. Sani Usman, dismissed the claims. He said troops and vigilantes managed to repel the terrorists, who fled ā€œwith with gunshot wounds.ā€

ā€œIt is imperative to state that contrary to rumours flying around some media reports, no life was lost,ā€ Usman said.

Also adding, ā€œadditionally, there is no presence of the terrorists in any of the villages talk less of hoisting flags as alleged. The troops have continued to maintain high level of vigilance.ā€
