The Oyo State Police Command has foiled a robbery at Zenith Bank, Oyo town and arrested four suspects who attempted to break into the bank’s vault.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi, said after gaining entrance into the premises of the bank, the robbers were confronted by a combined team of Special Anti-robbery Squad and a patrol team, leading to a shootout.

He said, “On September 9, 2016 at about 1.15 am, a gang of armed robbers invaded the Oyo branch of the bank and attempted to break into the bank’s vault.

“As a result of the superior fire power of the police, the criminals were forced to flee the scene. Some equipment abandoned by the bandits were later recovered.”

The suspects arrested are Ismail Olarinde (40), Moshood Adedeji (58), Ahmed Akande (45), and Abiodun Adesanya (44). A Nissan Micra with number plate GBH 308 XH, one cut-to-size gun, gas cylinder, a big wrench and face masks were recovered at the scene.

Fifty-eight-year-old Adedeji said the operation was organised by one Saliu, now at large, and that the information he gave was that there was a lot of money in the banking hall that day.

“He recruited us for the job and he is the owner of the equipment we used in the robbery. I met him at Adamasingba Stadium during a football match two months ago and we became friends. I have financial problem because my soap business is no longer profitable. When Saliu spoke to me, I agreed to do the job so I travelled from Ibadan to Oyo with other members of the gang. I am married with three children,” he said.
