The Niger State Police Command have arrested one of its officers Isah Mohammed, for shooting and killing a bus driver over N50 at a checkpoint along Tegina-Lagos Road Niger state.
According to eyewitness accounts, the police sergeant was said to have demanded a N100 roger to which the driver gave him only N50 saying he could not part with the other half as he walked toward his vehicle.
This, eyewitnesses said angered the policeman and reportedly cocked and fired at the driver, killing him instantly and injuring his conducting who was walking alongside him when the shot was fired.
The incident led to a protest by other drivers who barricaded the Tegina-Lagos road for few hours and complained of incessant harassment of policemen
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Spokesperson, DSP Bala Elkana, said the officer has been arrested and detained and is currently undergoing investigation as directed by the state Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu Abubakar.
He added that the commissioner urged the members of the public, especially commercial drivers not to take law into their hands stating that justice would be done in the case.
