INEC: PVCs won’t be collected by Proxy

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, has affirmed that the commission will not allow the collection of the Permanent Voter Cards by proxy.

Yakubu expressed concern over the slow distribution of the PVCs  during a meeting with state resident  electoral commissioners and administrative officers in Abuja on Tuesday.

He had said in a meeting with the media on Monday that the commission had not distributed 7.8 million PVCs from the 2015 elections and ordered immediate distribution of the uncollected PVCs.

The INEC boss challenged the RECs and the administrative officers to ensure that the process of PVCs’ distribution was expedited.

He said, “There is the issue of uncollected PVCs and preparations for the forthcoming continuous voter registration. In one of our meetings on approach and update on the level of collection of PVCs, what I received as of Monday last week is not very encouraging.

“Not much has been achieved since the last meeting. We would like to know before we can expedite the process. There would no delivery of PVCs by proxy. It has to be delivered to the owner.”

He said that the meeting was necessary for the commission to reflect on the elections it had conducted in order to learn some lessons from them.

Yakubu stated also that it was necessary for the commission to take a look at the preparations for the next major elections in Anambra and Osun states.

He added  that commission still had three elections to conduct from the 2015 general elections in Anambra Central Senatorial District, a state constituency election in Delta and a federal constituency election in Katsina State.
