Court remands man for stealing car battery

A man identified as Omiyefa Awolana has been remanded in court by an Osun Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ile-Ife on Friday remanded for allegedly stealing motor vehicle battery.

The Prosecutor, Inspector, Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 5, around 8.30 a.m. at Oke-Ayetoro Street, Ile-Ife.

Abdullahi said Awolana conspired with others now at large to steal one Fargo motor vehicle battery valued at N25,000, property of Amusat Surajudeen.

He added that the defendant also broke into the house of Dayo Moses and stole his Itel phone, valued unknown, with N10,000 cash.

The prosecutor said Awolana also stole three Itel phones and two Tecno phones, value unknown, with cash sum of N8,000.

He explained that the offence was contrary to sections 383, 410 and punishable under sections 390 (9), 411 and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The defendant, who was not legally represented, pleaded not guilty on the three-count charge of conspiracy, house-breaking and stealing.

The Magistrate, Olalekan Ijiyode, granted bail to Awolana in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like amount.

Ijiyode said the sureties must swear to affidavit of means, must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and their addresses verified by court officials, as well as provide two recent passport photographs each.

He added that one of the sureties must be a civil servant of Grade/level 10, must submit his/her appointment letter and last promotion letter and must get identification letter from the state’s head of service.

He ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody till perfection of the bail conditions and adjourned the case till Aug. 9 for hearing.
