#United4Food Music Concert

Our vision is a secure and prosperous Nigeria, where the benefits from economic growth are shared so the basic needs of all people are met; where the rights of women are respected; where all people, especially the youth, can participate in decision making and influence the policies that impact on their lives; and where public and private sector institutions are accountable and transparent. Central to this is the belief that power relations need to change to enable poor people to demand and claim their rights.

Seventy percent (70%) of Nigeria’s poor live in the rural areas and derive their livelihood from small-scale agriculture. Investing in Agriculture remains the most viable way for the Country to achieve an economic revival and a sustainable and inclusive national development. So, efforts to be made in fighting hunger must prioritise agriculture and climate change adaptation. THE AGRIC SECTOR DESERVES THE ATTENTION THAT WAS GIVING TO ‘ABUJA AIRPORT RUNWAY’!!

Across African countries, economic and non- economic push factors such unemployment or underemployment in rural areas, low wages, and no assets as well as lack of land, poor rural infrastructure in general, i.e. poor living conditions referring to housing, education possibilities and healthcare are some of the reasons why people migrate from rural area to the cities. The migration if not curbed will have implication on food security and sustainable development, and will make our fight against hunger a herculean task. We must put resources together for rural infrastructures, build the resilience of the rural farmers against unforeseen circumstances to be able to withstand these shocks.

As we prepare for the 2018 fiscal year, I would like to call on government to ‘Walk the Talk’ by putting money where our mouth is (as we popularly say in Nigeria) by increasing the amount of budget that goes to agriculture. Nigeria is the GIANT and Largest economy in Africa, NO ONE DESERVES TO GO TO BED HUNGRY!
