10 officers suspended for alleged extortion in Niger State

10 officers were suspended by the Niger State Directorate of Road Traffic Services indefinitely for extorting money from motorists.

The Provost, Training and Testing, DRTS, Iliya Jankaro, disclosed this to Northern City News in his office in Minna, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Jankaro said the command would not tolerate extortion of money from motorists, adding that the suspended officers would be punished if indicted in the ongoing probe.

“If those officers at the end of the day are found guilty, they would be sacked and that will serve as deterrent to other officers who might be nursing the ambition to be corrupt,” he said.

Commenting on the menace of fake driving licence and number plates, he said measures had been put in place in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to check the act.

Jankaro said patrol operations were going on in major towns like Bida, Suleja, Mokwa, Kontagora Minna and Mokwa to ensure that only road-worthy vehicles plied the roads.

He admonished motorists to overhaul their vehicles and obey speed limits to avoid accidents on the roads.
