UEFA Champions League Review

Liverpool completed the line up for English teams that advanced to the next round of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) a with a 7-0 win over Spartak Moscow at Anfield.

Liverpool’s front line were unstoppable with goals from Philippe Coutinho (3), Sadio Mane (2), Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah sealing passage into the first knockout stage as Group E winners.

Liverpool become the 5th English team in the last 16 after Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United had earlier sealed their spots. This is the first time ever.

In the other group game, Spanish side Sevilla also secured a place in the last 16 despite playing a 1-1 draw with hosts Maribor.

The Slovenians took a first half lead through Tavares before Paulo Henrique Ganso’s 75th minute strike rescued a point for Sevilla.

In Group F, Ukrainian champions Shakthar Donetsk are through to the next round following their 2-1 home win over Manchester City courtesy first half goals from Bernard and Ismaily.

Substitute Sergio Aguero pulled one back from the spot for the Premier League leaders on the stroke of fulltime as the team ended up on the losing side for the first time since April.

Still in Group F, Dutch champions Feyenoord picked up their first points in Europe with a surprising 2-1 win at home to Napoli despite finishing the game with 10 men.

Piotr Zelinski gave the visitors an early lead but the hosts bounced back in the half through Danish striker Nicolai Joergensen.

Feyenoord star Tony Vilhena received his marching orders after the interval for two yellow cards before his teammate Jeremiah St. Juste popped up with the winner in added time thus sealing Napoli’s elimination from the competition.

Group G winners Besiktas defeated their hosts RB Leipzig 2-1 with goals from Alvaro Negredo (penalty) and Anderson Talisca.

The hosts played a fraction of the game with 10 men following the dismissal of Austrian international Stefan Ilsanker with Naby Keita getting what proved to be the consolation goal.

In the other group game, FC Porto thrashed Monaco 5-2 at home in a bad-tempered match which saw both sides play a large part of the game with 10 men after the dismissal of Felipe and Rachid Ghezzal.

Vincent Aboubakar (2), Yacine Brahimi, Alex Telles and Tiquinho got the goals that secured Porto’s passage into the next stage. Kamil Gilk (penalty) and Radamel Falcao scored the consolation goals for last season’s semifinalists.

Tottenham Hotspur defeated APOEL Nicosia 3-0 at the Wembley Stadium through goals from Fernando Llorente, Son Heung-Min and Georges N’Koudou to end an impressive Group H campaign on a high.

Lucas Vazquez netted the winner in the last 10 minutes to give his Real Madrid side a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Estadio Santiago Bernebeu in the other Group H game.

A brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang either side of halftime had cancelled out early goals from Borja Mayoral and Cristiano Ronaldo before Vazquez’s late intervention.
