President Muhammadu Buhari has apologized on behalf of the administration of former President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida for annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential elections presumably won by the late MKO Abiola and his party the Social Democratic Party.
This comes following the president’s declaration as that June 12th, no longer May 29th would be celebrated as Democracy Day in Nigeria in honour of the late Abiola, who was robbed off his mandate.
Here is what Buhari wrote via Twitter
On behalf of the Federal Government, I tender the nation’s apology to the family of the Late MKO Abiola, who got the highest votes in the June 12, 1993 election; and to all those who lost their loved ones in the cause of the June 12 struggle.

President Buhari also formally conferred late MKO Abiola with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), the highest honor of the land today.
