The Nigeria Police Force has finally declared wanted the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Malam Nuhu Ribadu and the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Nasir el-Rufai.
The police high command had therefore issued a signal for their arrest.
A copy of the signal was obtained exclusively by our correspondents on Wednesday.
The signal, which had been sent to all police formations said police were “watch-listing the above named persons el-Rufai and Ribadu for acts contrary to sections 96, 120,123 and 124 CAP 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990 and some provisions of the Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Act, 2000.”
The signal which was marked, ”immediate” was also addressed to the INTERPOL. It ordered all policemen to effect the arrest of the two men if they were seen.
It also ordered all commissioners of police to treat the signal as “very important.”
The Code of Conduct Tribunal had on November 20, 2009 ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbona Onovo, to arrest Ribadu for refusing to appear before it.
The tribunal’s Chairman, Justice Constance Momoh, issued the order after she was told that Ribadu was not before the tribunal to answer charges of non-declaration of assets filed against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau.
She said, “In line with our ruling of October 23, 2009, when we held that we will order the arrest of Ribadu if he failed to appear on the next adjourned date.
We will make good that promise. We hereby order the IG and police generally to arrest the accused person and detain him until our next adjourned date which is December 4, 2009.”
The Code of Conduct Tribunal had last week renewed the bench warrant issued for the arrest of Ribadu.
El-Rufai had also been declared wanted by the EFCC. It had slammed an eight-count charge on him and two others – Altine Jubrin and Ismail Iro.
