Gunmen Strike Again – Another Journalist Dies

Edo Sule Ugbagwu, a journalist and judiciary correspondent of the Nation newspaper was shot dead on Saturday 24th April, 2010 reports say that at about 6.30pm armed men attacked the residence of the reporter which is located at No 39 Church Street, Shasha, Akowonjo, a Lagos suburb.Though reports indicate that the theives intended on stealing some money from the deceased younger brother Okloho Sule Ugbagwu all they left with was blood stained hands.
Reports state that Edo came out of his bedroom on hearing noises and immediately demanded to know the mission of the intruders, after which he asked them to leave. The gunmen however responded with two-gun shots aimed at his fore-head before finally taking their leave. All efforts to save his life or resuscitate him proved abortive as Edo was said to have died immediately. The gunmen zoomed off in a red Honda and are yet to be apprehended. While the family and other sympathetic Nigerians mourns this great loss, the incident begs the question “what measures are being taken to ensure the security of the Nigerian citizen”? Will we always cower and shiver in fright while those who choose the path of lawlessness and violence, oppress and slaughter the innocent recklessly.
Sadly the demise of Edo Sule Ugbagwu occurred just about seven months after The Guardian newspapers’ Assistant news editor was killed by gunmen in the same neighbourhood and while interested Nigerians watch to see what lengths the police will go in finding the perpetrators of this homicide it seems Nigerians must in the meantime seek their own safety.
