Nigeria Police Recants “Suicide Bomber” Claim

The Nigerian Police today retracted its claim that last Thursday’s that bombing of its national headquarters in Abuja was carried out by a suicide bomber.

Olusola Amore, the Public Relations Officer of the force, said investigations were continuing as to the actual cause of the blast, but denied a report in Thisday newspaper that Inspector General Hafiz Ringim had met with the bomber in his house in Maitama

“Investigation into the bomb blast is on course and when there is development members of the media will be updated about the investigations but you will be patient and not allow your report to jeopardize investigation”, Mr. Amore said.

The bomb, which exploded as the driver of the Mercedes Benz in which it was planted was being directed to the general car park of Louis Edet House headquarters of the Police, claimed the life of the driver of the car.
SaharaReporter’s sources at the Presidency said Mr. Ringim has come under a lot of pressure by the Office of the National Security Adviser. Yesterday, the IG was yanked away from a high level meeting of State Commissioners of Police he had convened.  His planned press briefing was also canceled, leading to rumours that he was going to be removed.

Mr. Amore has however denied claims of making such a statement as he said official statements about the bombing of the Police Headquarters can only be issued by the IGP.
