Two policemen feared dead in bullion van attack

Two riot policemen were killed by suspected armed robbers in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday after unknown bandits attacked a bullion van. The policemen served as escorts for the bullion van.

The suspected robbers were also said to have carted away unspecified amount of money which the bullion van was said to be conveying to an unknown destination. According to eyewitnesses, the van was heading to the direction of the Government House when the bandits struck.

The attack occurred around 1.30pm at Gibbs Street Junction by Barracks Road, Uyo.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Joseph, said, “When we first saw two vehicles, we thought they were Special Anti-Robbery Squad, but all off a sudden, a saloon car blocked the bullion van and opened fire at the riot policemen. “The robbers began to shoot straight towards the direction of Area ‘A’ Police Command. Everybody was scampered to safety.”

There were speculations that the van was conveying money which would have been used by the government to buy off motorcycles from the commercial motorcycle operators.

The state government recently banned the use of commercial motorcycles
