Court Stops Anambra Senatorial Polls

OBI-THE Appeal Court sitting in Enugu yesterday evening ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to suspend the conduct of the February 15 rerun election in the Anambra senatorial district pending the determination of the appeal filed before it by one of the candidates in the polls, Mr. Andy Uba.

In a unanimous judgment, the five-man appeal panel currently reviewing its earlier judgment in which it ordered a fresh election in the senatorial district, stated that doing so would alter the processes it had already begun.

The court had last week adjourned till February 16, further hearing on the matter in which Uba is challenging the decision of the court in ordering fresh election in the constituency after it had ruled on the same in an application brought by the Chuma Nzeribe.

Justice Denton West, who read the judgment, appealed to parties in the matter to maintain calm, stressing also that INEC, being a party in the suit before, would not be said to be fair to the parties until the matter is determined.
