Customs officer faces probe for mercilessly beating up teacher, Oyo state government demands apology.

It will be recalled that on Friday a Customs Officer attached to the Osun/Oyo command lead his wife and some of his other colleagues to ruthlessly beaten up a secondary school teacher for reprimanding his son, Allison Chukwuebuka.

The boy has been expelled from the school.

This incident led the Nigeria Customs Service (NSC) to set up a probe panel to investigate the beating of a secondary school teacher, Mr Gbenga Ogunleye, by officials of the service.

The Deputy Comptroller (Administration), Bumba Muhammed, while addressing newsmen in Ibadan, yesterday, disclosed that the current management of the Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of Comptroller- General Abdullahi Dikko, had zero- tolerance for any act of indiscipline or irresponsibility.

He said the service would investigate the allegation against the officer involved, with a view to punishing him.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Oyo State council in a statement by its acting secretary, Edema Olorunwa has condemned the assault referring to it as “the uncivilised behaviour of a supposed father and unfortunately an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, an organisation that is supposed to exhibit orderliness and discipline.”

The Oyo State Government has asked Nigerian Customs Service to tender a formal apology to it as the employer of the teacher.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led administration in its quest for an apology, said the wicked act and brutality of a hardworking teacher during the course of service to his fatherland would not be tolerated in any form.

The state government condemned the action of the Customs officers, describing it as harassment and brutality of the teacher by co-lawless officers.

The government, through a statement by the Special Adviser on Labour matters, Mr. Akinola Tunde added that;

“Nigeria Customs Service should carry out appropriate discipline to the affected officers as Oyo State Government is determined to protect any of its public workforce against any act of brutality from any quarters.”

The Oyo State House of Assembly has invited the Customs Service to appear before it next week in respect of the incident.

  1. This custom officer has not said his own account. To me his silence is simply an agreement to what the teacher had said. With this conclusion, I would welcome a situation where the officer is bent on the same punitive measure given to that of naval officer Arogundade. A teacher who’s struggling to see that students are trained well should not be paid back with battery as done. We should be kept updated in this. It must not be swept under the carpet.
