Escaped Boko Haram Kingpin, Kabir Sokoto Re-arrested

Escaped Boko Haram suspect Kabiru Sokoto has been re- arrested by the SSS working together with other security agencies in Mutum Biu, Taraba state.

Kabiru Sokoto is alleged to be the masterminded behind the bombing of St Theresa Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State on Christmas Day which claimed more than 40 lives.

It would be recalled that Sokoto escaped from police custody while he was being taken to his residence at Abaji, located in  Federal Capital Territory for a search. This escape led to the sacking of the former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim.

The Boko Haram mastermind was picked up from a hut where he was hiding with his brother.

Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati told The Associated Press on Friday that members of the SSS arrested Sokoto in Taraba state. Abati said he had no other details about the arrest, and referred questions to the State Security Service.

A spokeswoman for the secret police agency declined to immediately comment. However, another security official who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to journalists, said officers arrested Sokoto as he hid behind a clothesline at a home in the state.

Sokoto will be flown back to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on an air force flight, the official said.
