ATTEMPTS by armed bandits yesterday to snatch a brand new Toyota Camry car at the Ogun State Governor’s Office in Abeokuta was foiled by the police as one of the robbers was killed.
The robbers said to be four, had arrived at the car park of the Governor’s Office and attempted to forcibly open the car, marked AKM 146 AA, in order to drive it away.
But luck ran out on them when the owner a staff of the Ministry of Education, on spotting them raised alarm and immediately other civil servants around joined in the alarm .
“At that point,” an eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, told The Guardian: “The robbers jumped into their vehicle, a Nissan Quest, marked Abuja 944 RSH and sped off.”
The source added that before they got to the main entrance of the Governor’s Office, the security there had locked the gate, forcing the robbers to drive at top speed into the locked entrance.
He added that the robbers only managed to break into the gate and got out, but their car could not move afterwards, stressing that the policemen at the gate opened fire on them
. In the process, one of the robbers was shot dead, while three others escaped into a nearby bush.
In his reaction, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, described the incident as “unheard of,” insisting that it was the wish of God that the robbers failed in their ungodly act.
Also, the State Poilice Commissioner, Mr. Nicolas Nkemdeme, said: “This is the most embarrassing situation I have ever seen for armed robbers to enter the Governor’s Office”
